English Japanese Online Dictionary's Type in Japanese, Page 4

Typing Japanese with an English (QWERTY) keyboard is very userful but takes a little skill and a little learning. With practice one can become very adept at typing Japanese. The basic idea is to enter text phonetically--it's very similar to spelling in ROOMAJI (but there are some important differences). Then, press the space bar and the text is entered. Pressing a second time allow the typer to choose from appropriate KANJI.
