English Japanese Online Dictionary Kanji Pages

Return to Kanji Table of Contents

dictionary_kanjiKANJI are the Chinese characters that are used in the modern Japanese writing system along with HIRAGANA and KATAKANA. Arabic numerals are also used in modern Japanese. The Japanese term KANJI literally means "Chinese character".

In modern Japanese, KANJI are used to write parts of the language such as nouns, adjective stems and verb stems, while hiragana are used to write inflected verb and adjective endings (okurigana), particles (or relationals), native Japanese words, and words where the kanji is too difficult to read or remember. Katakana is used for representing onomatopoeia, non-Japanese loanwords, and for emphasis on certain words.

EJOD KANJI pages show the most basic and most used KANJI. Included are the KANJI, the KAKIJUN (writing- or stroke-order), the English meaning, the Chinese reading (ON-YOMI), the Japanese reading (KUN-YOMI) and example sentences.

Mouse over area above and click on the play button to see how the Kanji should be made.
