Scholarship, Bursary, Grant Opportunities

Students of Japan, it's culture and the Japanese language. Here are some of the many opportunities for you to continue your studies:

 

Japanese Government Scholarships

Research students

You must be under 35 years of age and a college graduate (includes prospective graduates). If you would like to enroll in a master's program, you must be a college graduate and have completed 16 years of schooling.

Teacher training students

You must be under 35 years of age and, in principle, a graduate of a college or teacher training college. You must have at least five years of active experience as a teacher in a primary, secondary or teacher training college in your country. (Please note that college and university teachers currently in active service are not considered for this scholarship).

Undergraduate university students

You must be at least 17 and under 22 years of age and have completed 12 years of school education or have completed courses in a school comparable to a high school (includes prospective graduates).

Japanese studies students

Applicants must be from eighteen to twenty-nine years old. Applicants must be enrolled as undergraduate students in faculties or schools which major in Japanese language or Japanese culture in a university outside Japan at the time when they come to Japan and must be enrolled in the home institution at the time when they return to their home countries. Students majoring in the fields other than Japanese language or Japanese culture who wish to study various aspects of Japan( engineering, economy, agriculture, architecture, art, etc.)as part of their major studies should apply to the AIEJ for admission to the Short-term Student Exchange Promotion Program.

College of technology students

You must be at least 17 and under 22 years of age and have completed school education comparable to a high school (a minimum of 11 years beginning in primary school) education (includes prospective graduates).

Special training college students

You must be at least 18 and under 22 years of age and have completed 12 years of schooling or have completed school education comparable to a Japanese high school (includes prospective graduates).

Young Leaders' Program(YLP) students

Applicants must be young public administrators and so on, from Asian and other countries participating in the YLP who are expected to play active roles as future national leaders in their respective countries. The participants must be university or college graduates, who have at least 3-5 years' work experiences in public administration or enterprises and so on(*). The screening of the participants is based on recommendations of the recommending authorities.
(*)There are five different YLP programs, each of which has different qualifications in work experience and affiliation, and the recommending authorities.

The National Science Foundation

Offers summer programs and support for U.S. graduate students in science and engineering as well as the social sciences. The program is designed to provide students with first-hand experience in Japanese research environments and an introduction to the science and science policy infrastructure of the country and language training. The program lasts approximately eight weeks from June/July to August. Application deadline is December 1 annually. The Japan Foundation Scholarships

"The Japan Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose objective is to promote international cultural exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and other countries through 1) the exchange of persons; 2) support of Japanese studies; 3) support of Japanese-language instruction; 4) arts-related exchanges. Established by special legislation in the Japanese Diet in 1972, the Foundation operates on the income from an endowment and subsidies contributed by the Japanese government and private circles," (from The Japan Foundation Brochure). Atsumi International Scholarship Foundation

Offers scholarships to foreign students studying at graduate schools in Japan for the academic year (from April to March). Non-Japanese nationals who come to Japan for study or research, and are enrolled in an AISF-designated graduate school; any Ph.D. candidate in the last year of study; and students who are interested in international understanding and friendship and willing to participate in AISF sponsored activities are eligible. National Security Education Program

National Security Education Program provides merit-based scholarships for undergraduates who study abroad in areas deemed critical to US security and economic well-being which includes Japan. In general, juniors and seniors may apply if they are planning international study of one or more semesters' freshman and sophomores, if they are planning intensive summer or academic term study. Applicants should be aware that acceptance of an NSEP scholarship incurs a service obligation--typically an internship in a national security-related government office--equal in time to the NSEP-supported period abroad to be fulfilled within 8 years of graduation. The campus deadline for submission of application materials to the Office of International Programs is mid-January. Finalists are announced in late April. The purpose of the Institute of Current World Affairs is to provide talented and promising individuals with an opportunity to develop a deep understanding of an issue, country or region outside the United States and to share that understanding with a wider public. JET Program

The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme invites university graduates from overseas to participate in international exchange and foreign language education throughout Japan. Established in 1987, the programme has earned a high reputation, both in Japan and overseas, for its efforts in youth and cultural exchanges, and has become one of the largest exchange programmes in the world.

Itoh Scholarship Foundation

A non-profit charitable institute devoted to helping young people pursue academic study that will encourage better understanding between Japan and other countries. The fund provides financial assistance for the study of the Japanese language at Japanese universities and equivalent institutions by non-natives; scholarships for foreign students studying at a Japanese high school, university undergraduate or postgraduate course; and bonuses for students of Japanese language schools who came to Japan for the purpose of study or research. JTP Program

Japan Technology Management Program at the University of Michigan offers financial support to students who combine the study of Japan with an aspect of science, technology, and their applications. Five types of fellowships are offered: summer language study, tuition support for study in Japan exchange programs, academic year study, Ph.D. candidate support, and research support. Applications must be postmarked by February 1, 1999. NSEP National Security Education Program

National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships

Government-funded scholarships for study in areas of the world outside western Europe, Canada, and Australia. Recipients are required to fulfill a service requirement by working in higher education or for the US government. Application available online. The national deadline for applications is usually in mid February. However, most campuses have a local representative to assist with the application process. Grew Foundation Scholarships

This Foundation was established in 1950, in honor of the late American Ambassador to Japan, Joseph C. Grew. Its purpose is the cultivation of understanding between peoples of Japan and the United States through providing educational opportunities for Japanese youths to study at American liberal arts colleges. It gives a limited number of scholarships to promising high school graduates for their undergraduate education in the United States. The International House of Japan has administered the Grew Foundation since 1971.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

Sponsored by the US Department of State and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students to pursue semester or academic-year long study abroad opportunities.
