WUPs (Warm Ups for Japanese classes)
Suggested teacher use: When students come into your classroom at the beginning of each class, have them pick up a WUP sheet off your desk. The size of a WUP sheet is about 1/4 to 1/3 of a regular sheet of paper. WUPs review HIRAGANA, KATAKANA, or KANJI which have been previously taught. WUPs will enable students to start working before the bell that begins your class. WUP #1 is for the first class after the HIRAGANA teaching begins. WUP #2 is for the next class, WUP #3 is for the following class, etc. Each WUP should be completed within 5-6 minutes.
Students hand in the WUP when they are finished. About a few minutes into the class, most of the students will have handed in that day’s WUPs. If any students have not finished, have them finish during out-of-class time. (i.e., at home, at noon, etc.) Have your TA mark WUPs. Any WUP is worth 5 points. One error on a WUP gives a student a mark of 4 out of 5. Second error on the same WUP gives a mark of 3 out of 5. More than two errors results in zero out of 5. Students who do not finish their WUP may hand them in later (in the class or next day or any time during the term). The TA records the students’ WUP mark on the computer, and will hand back the marked WUP the next class. WUPs receiving less than 5 can be redone and regraded. Any WUP can be redone as many times as a student desires. There could be as many as 40 WUPs for a term, depending on how many classes have been taught during the term. A single WUP exercise takes up about 1/4 to 1/3 of a sheet, so it’ll take 8 to 10 sheets of photocopies to obtain 30 separate WUP (exercise if you have a class of 30 students).
