The Game of SHOOGI and the KATAKANA K Series

Game pieces are on the next page, 77A. Cut out each piece, being careful not to cut-off the movement arrows. Once all the pieces are cut out, arrange all the pieces in starting position on the SHOOGIDAI (SHOOGI Board) which will need to be prepared. You may obtain inexpensive KOMA (pieces for the game) plus DAI at a store like Daiso. The object of the game is to checkmate your opponent’s king. If SENSEI does not know how to play this game, invite someone from the community to instruct.
SHOOGI board is a 9 x 9 square affair with the squares large enough to accommodate even the largest piece. Lettering the files from A to I, and the ranks from 1 to 9 will enable easy group instruction. For example, the first move of a game might be described as H3 - H4, which means that the FU (pawn) on the H3 square advances one square to H4. Check online if necessary for instructions for names of pieces, movement of pieces, strategies, etc.
