The Japanese Writing System
Four writing methods are employed in Japanese:
ROOMAJI: English letters, belonging to a family of Latin or Roman alphabet, is most frequently used to convey Japanese sounds to foreigners (i.e., non-Japanese people). This textbook uses the de facto Hepburn system of romanization of the modified variety. Japanese students are required to learn ROOMAJI in school, and use it to write Japanese sounds to foreigners.
HIRAGANA: Japanese alphabet used for words of Japanese origin.
KATAKANA: Japanese alphabet used (1) for words of foreign origin, and (2) for emphasis.
KANJI: A selected number of Chinese characters have been adopted by the Japanese government for every day use. Japanese have also invented a few of their own. Reading and writing of all KANJI require specialized study.
